Participant Testimonial
I have been a patient at The Bailey Clinic since April 2010. In that time, I have been involved in 3 studies for a variety of new medications. I have very much enjoyed my participation in the studies for several reasons. First of all, the idea of being involved in the research of a medication that may help me and thousands of other people with diabetes is an inspiring experience. Having been a science major, I have found the research component very exciting. I have found that being involved in the studies has helped me learn more about my own illnesses and how my body reacts to medications and food for both the good and bad. Dealing with The Bailey Clinic has been a very positive experience in that all the staff is very knowledgeable and eager to answer all my questions or find the answer if they don’t know it. The fact that the staff is wonderful and caring only adds to the experience. I intend to continue being involved in as many studies as I can and perhaps, one day soon, we will find a definitive defense against diabetes and heart disease. - LC

The Bailey Clinic is seeking participants for the following studies:
  • FLOW: Studying an available medication in patients with Type 2 Diabetes and moderate kidney disease       https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03819153?term=9535-4321&draw=2&rank=1

What are Clinical Research Studies?
Clinical research studies help us answer specific questions about investigational medicines and devices such as:
  • Is it effective?
  • Is it more effective than another treatment?
  • Is it safe and/or does it have any side effects?

The development of new medications and devices can take over 10 years - a long time for patients waiting for the treatment. Although long, this length of time is vital to ensure each medicine and device is tested rigorously prior to it becoming available for use in the general public.

Who participates in Clinical Research Studies?
Every year, thousands upon thousands of people take part in clinical research studies. Some of these studies need healthy volunteers and others need volunteers with a particular disease or condition. All volunteers are important because without them, the development of new medicines couldn't continue.

Why participate in a Clinical Research Study?
There are many reasons why people take part in clinical research studies, including the chance to:
  • Help in the development of a medicine that may benefit them in the future.
  • Receive monitoring for their health.
  • Help find new cures and treatments for the future

What is involved in participating?
Every clinical research study is unique. Where one may last a few weeks, another may last several years. If you join a study and change your mind at a later date, you are free to leave the study at any time without your usual healthcare being affected.
Before a Study
  • Every research study is reviewed by a Research Ethics Board (REB), which is made up of scientists, non-scientist professionals, and members of the public.
  • Before joining, the study is explained to all participants and they are given the chance to ask questions. They are then asked to sign an informed consent form (ICF) to show that they understand and agree to what the study involves.
During a Study
  • While a study is ongoing, a team of study doctors and staff at the study center monitors each participants health.
As with most things, there may be some risks and discomforts involved in taking part in clinical research studies. However, participant safety is the number one priority during every stage of the process.

What doctors may be involved in my care if I participate in a Clinical Research Study?
All physicians involved in clinical research at The Bailey Clinic are licensed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and are approved by the Health Research Ethics Board of Alberta - Clinical Trials Committee.
